For example, if you accidentally delete a file, it will instantly be removed from both mirrored copies. RAID 1 isn’t a substitute for backup because there are a lot of risks that it can’t protect against. (In computer main memory, auxiliary storage and computer buses, data redundancy is the existence of data that is additional to the actual data and permits correction of errors in stored or transmitted data.) Writes identical data to all drives simultaneously.RAID 1 is often used when fault tolerance is key, and space and performance are not critical requirements. A single drive failure can be sustained without data loss. Read performance is increased while write performance is similar to that of a single drive. Data on the drives are mirrored, providing fault tolerance in case of drive failure.

Here is the full hardware list that I recommend. Use ssh/scp to put it on your NAS and add it to a cron job.

You can download my script and use it yourself: nas-backup-1.0.0.tar.gz Each drive has space for two backups, so I have 6 different backups available just on the drives that are connected: Available backups:
There is always one backup in the safety deposit box in my bank. When it is on a backup drive, I just stop using that drive.īecause of the risk of physical damage (even the risk of my house burning down!), I take a backup drive off-site every month. When it is in the NAS, I just replace the drive and let the NAS re-sync. I'd say I get a drive failure every year or two. Raid0 and mutiple external drives really helps with drive failures. Accidentally deleting important files and not noticing until the deletions have propogated to the backups.
Physical damage (like dropping my NAS and backup drives). The entire backup (or even multiple backups) can fit on an external drive.I put two large drives in my NAS and use raid1 (mirrored disks). My data easily fits on a single large drive so: I use external drives to backup everything on my Synology NAS.
